Context is a competitive advantage

I only wrote about our rebrand last time to force myself to finish the exercise. It worked. But after a few days, I realized I'd made a rookie mistake.

In the split second after landing on our website, you shouldn't have to guess whether we sell safety razors, orthopedic shoes or low-code systems development. Move Fast With Confidence sounds nice, but it doesn't tell you who we are.

As I've been instructed: “A good tagline communicates what you do while making the audience feel something at the same time.” Here's where we landed.

Hear the music. See the business.
Operational intelligence for modern music companies

The first line captures the emotional outcome. The second tells you exactly what business we're in. As my brand consultant likes to say, "Nobody else can run it."

But as the work moved onto value setting, I began to second guess myself again. What actually is Operational Intelligence?

Every new user, workflow, and integration adds context to the system. That context doesn’t just accumulate linearly. It compounds by making everything that’s already there more valuable.

In other words, the more context your operating system accumulates, the more leverage it creates for the business. That's when it clicked. Operational intelligence is context shared across your organization. And the strength of your systems determines how effectively that context can be shared.

While your competitors are sitting in meetings, chasing information, fixing avoidable mistakes, and relying on other people’s memory, your team is already moving the business forward. That’s a competitive advantage.

That’s when your Airtable bill stops being another software expense item and becomes an organizational asset that increases in value over time (not tax advice 😉).

As intended, writing this newsletter forced me to finish our company values. In doing so I realized they aren't just a belief system for employees, but a set of principles for helping our clients accumulate operational intelligence.

Here they are.

  • Radical Honesty - Sometimes your first idea isn't your best one. We'll tell you what we think, even if it costs us the business.
  • Simplicity - Our goal is to remove complexity, not add it. We're not interested in doing more work for the sake of staying busy.
  • Results - We care about achieving positive business outcomes and want you to get the credit for them. When you succeed, we succeed.
  • Fluency - We don't want you to have to spend time explaining the music business. We've sat in your seat. We know the reason everything is always urgent. We can start solving problems on day one.

Speaking of solving problems. Our next podcast guest, Chris Herche SVP of Music, Operations and Marketing at Create Music Group, has spent his career doing exactly that.

Noteworthy Quotes:

  • “It’s not about what you can get from someone; it’s about what you can bring and how you can add value.”
  • “You don’t need the same resources as a major label; you need data, cash, marketing, and a great dashboard.”
  • “Being able to build a community within a distributor is really a beautiful thing.”
  • “AI and automation can help workflows, but art and creativity are always human-driven.”
  • “Helping these young entrepreneurs pursue their dreams is the most rewarding part of my work.”
